Monolithos is a picturesque village with stone built little houses and narrow lanes, laying 73 km. away from Rhodes town, at the north west. Its name originates from the massive monolithic rock where the local castle was built at the time of the Knights. The outer fortress of the castle is maintained in good condition and within it one can still see cisterns, parts of galleries as well the ruins of chapel of St. Panteleimon. The islands of Chalki and Alimia can be seen from this elevated point spectacularly clear.
